Seediq was a tribe that worshipped the rainbow in the Taiwan mountains.  They lived in a balance with the ecology in a paradise in the hills.  A hero came from the tribe's Mahebo Community, Mona Budao, son of the Mahebo Community's chief.  He returned from his first hunt with the head of another tribe, since then everyone in the tribe knew his name.  However good times did not last.  With the arrival of the Japanese colonial era, the Seediq tribe was forced to change from their original way of life.  Most of the tribe's men became slave labor while women became servants.  Seeing their home and hunting ground that their  ancestors worked hard to build gradually vanished under Japanese rule, Mona Rudao's heart ached and deeply believed in the ancestor's disciplines.  He could only on his own hunting ground pass through a variety of tests to earn the proud tattoo on his face and become a real Seediq.  Only after death would he be able to walk on the rainbow bridge that his ancestors recognized.

The first part of the WARRIORS OF THE RAINBOW: SEEDIQ BALE duology ended with the 1930 Wushe Incident, when the aboriginal Seediq violently rose up against the imperialist Japanese while also reaffirming their proud ancestral identity. Part two depicts the guerilla warfare employed as the Seediq, led by Chief Mouna Rudo, use Taiwan’s mountains and forests to their advantage. But the Japanese employ modern warfare – airplanes, cannons, tear gas and explosives – to mount their counterattack and the Seediq can only withstand for so long. Topping the critical and commercial success of CAPE NO. 7 would be difficult for Wei Te-sheng, but Taiwan’s top-grossing director meets the challenge head-on with this ambitious and powerful two-part epic.
