[ THE HONG KONG INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL ]
The Yang family during the Song Dynasty was the Chinese Empire's greatest military clan. The patriarch is loyal to the emperor. His loving wife has given him seven sons who all love their mother very much. When the patriarch falls prey to the scheme of a villain and is subsequently trapped by the northern barbarians, the six sons set out for the rescue. With battles scenes and single combats galore, and the seven sons played by Chinese-language cinema's hottest males (with their pretty faces and buff bodies), this is almost like The Iliad -- but with special Chinese characteristics.

[ THE FILM CATALOGUE ]
This is an epical tale about the renowned Song Dynasty’s military defense by the clan of Yang’s against the nomadic Northern nation the Liao, sometimes also known as the Khitans in ancient Chinese history account.

Headed by a charismatic old veteran general named YangYe, the Yang Clan has been the major military force protecting the Song Empire and its people against their ever invasive neighbor. From YangYe and his wife Madame She, we witness the coming of age of their seven sons namely Ping, Ding, Ang, Hui, De, Zhao and Si throughout the various battlefields in the story. The seven young men possess different temperament and characters united under a single banner and a heart of lion.

Gangster-style Johnnie goes Mainland, and the result is one hell of an entry. Louis Koo is Timmy, a Hong Kong drug trafficker, while Mainland police captain Zhang, played by Sun Honglei, is out there to get him. Zhang at times succeeds in capturing Timmy, and at times Timmy slips from Zhang's grasp (or does he?). Cop and robber caught in a classical, ghostly dance; their loyalties are different but their psychologies are the same. Single-minded, brutal and almost cold-blooded, the two men will stop at nothing to destroy each other. The final bloodbath at a primary school sets a new standard for violence. Harrowing, chilling stuff from a master craftsman.

The Anthony Wong Chau Sun, Anita Yuen Wing Yi, Eric Tsang Chi Wai and Gillian Chung Yun Tung starred Emperor Motion Picture IP MAN THE FINAL FIGHT (IP MAN JUNG GIK YUT JIN) won the bronze prize at the Udine Far East Film Festival, another Hong Kong film to win such honor since AFTER THIS OUR EXILE (FU JI) in 2007.

Director Herman Yau Lai To and screen writer Lee Man personally accepted the award and even said that winning an award in Udine with a film that was Hong Kong nostalgia was truly rare. They hoped more foreign viewers will be able to recognize this film and even like Hong Kong film.

This film festival did not have any competition and thus had no jury. However the festival traditionally arranged for viewers to vote for films that they have watched on a scale of 5 points. Finally the 3 films with the highest average points win prizes. IP MAN THE FINAL FIGHT received 4.25 points and won the Bronze prize.

Shiga Lin Si Nga, Jinny Ng Yeuk Hei and Jason Chung Yat Hin yesterday attended a Ma On Shan school event. Lin Si Nga and Ng Yeuk Hei will soon work on the Patrick Kong (Yip Lim Sum)'s new film.

Lin Si Nga revealed that the characters have not been decided yet and she awaited the film company's arrangement; but because she will work on another film about personality split, she worried that she would truly suffer from it. She said, "A comedy and a horror film, on several days they will overlap. I am afraid that I will really suffer from a personality split. Actually I have read the scripts and realized that many in Hong Kong had mood disorder. I too due to stress could not sleep or eat. Later I gradually started exercising and I was much more comfortable."

Ng Yeuk Hei in the film played a night club "Mamasan" character for the first film in the film. She said, "Actually I have always said to the director that I wanted to be a big sister mobster. Though that didn't happen, this time I felt a little similar. (Would you learn foul language and smoking?) I can say it, but during rehearsal the director thought my foul language wasn't convincing enough. Hopefully after the production begins I will be able to break through myself." She said that she could not accept strange men near her so she could not accept any intimate scene.

Summer will soon arrive. This summer will have over 30 film releases but foreign films still have the advantage with one blockbuster after another; perhaps due to IRON MAN 3, hero films rise in this period with the Brad Pitt starred WORLD WAR Z, the Hugh Jackman starred THE WOLVERINE, MAN OF STEEL, PACIFIC RIM and 300 RISE OF AN EMPIRE as well as a parody hero film KICK-ASS 2. Andy Lau Tak Wa will carry the banner for Chinese films with two films, SWITCH (TIN GEI FU CHUN SHAN GUI TOH) with Lin Chiling and BLIND DETECTIVE (MAN TAM) with diva Sammi Cheng Sau Man. Both adults and children like the animation MONSTER UNIVERSITY, the television Best Actor Wayne Lai Yiu Cheung voiced DESPICABLE ME 2 and the AVATAR and the ICE AGE team's EPIC.

This summer Chinese films will feature police and special agent films. Lau Tak Wa will have two. First he will work with Lin Chiling on the special agent film SWITCH and open the summer. Then he will work with his old co-star Cheng Sau Man in the police film BLIND DETECTIVE. On the same week will be the Masaharu Fukuyama and Yuriko Yoshitaka starred MIDSUMMER FORMULA (with 5 days between the 2 film releases). "Galileo" and Masaharu Fukuyama have many Hong Kong supporters and the television series is a hit in Japan. Thus MIDSUMMER FORMULA will have certain draw in Hong Kong. However, Wa Jai and Cheng Sau Man's best partnership has always been a box office guarantee. Wa Jai as a blind detective will be also refreshing. The clash between BLIND DETECTIVE and MIDSUMMER FORMULA will be fierce.

Summer Hong Kong films will also include the Shawn Yue Man Lok starred SDU: SEX DUTIES UNIT (FEI FU CHOOK JING), the alternative choice of the Nick Cheung Ka Fai and Eddie Peng Yu-Yen fight film MMA (GIK JIN) and the fresh out of the oven Best Supporting Actress DaDa Chan Jing and the recently hot Christine Kuo starred HARDCORE COMEDY (CHUNG HAU MEI). Vicki Zhao Wei's directing debut Mainland hit OUR ETERNALLY LOST YOUTH and the Lee Bik Wa ghost series based TALES FROM THE DARK I (MAI LEI YEH) and II (KEI WAN YEH), this summer will truly be a battlefield with many choices.

Carina Lau Ka Ling, Karena Ng Chin Yu and Amanda S. last night attended a Van Cleef & Arpels jewelry event. Although the weather remained chilly, Ka Ling could not care less with what she wore. Ka Ling revealed that she has always had many jewelry collections. Her husband Tony Leung Chiu Wai would also give her some on his own. She said, "Every woman likes jewelry, giving gift is something that he should do. However a woman should buy some herself, having someone to give some is even happier. Wai Jai sometimes would be more thoughtful than me, he even personally designed something for me. He is considered a romantic person, he often would give surprises and make me feel very touched."

As for work this year, Ka Ling said that she did not slack off as she worked on YOUNG DETECTIVE DEE RISE OF THE SEA DRAGON and the Cannes Film Festival selection BENDS (GOR GAI). She said, "Actually I have quietly done a lot of work. Wai Jai this year probably won't make a movie. Because THE GRANDMASTERS (YUT DOI JUNG SI) took too long, he needed to rest a little. However he wouldn't ask me to be off with him. We would give ach other time to do our own things and not restrict the others. Wai Jai's favorite thing is to stay at home. In the summer he would go to the sea. Now he is learning computers and practicing Wing Chun. He would wear a hat and medical mask to go to the supermarket, thinking that others would not be able to recognize him. Actually he is just fooling himself."

Nick Cheung with years of action film experience would not force anything
Finally Ka Fai escapes unharmed.

Nick Cheung Ka Fai recently worked on the Universe new film METAMORPHOSIS (SO DUK). Director Benny Chan Muk Sing asked more and more of him. Two days ago they even shot a scene in which Ka Fai was trapped inside a sinking vehicle. Some stills immediately were unveiled online. The water pressure forced Ka Fai's face against the glass. After successfully escaping his head was crushed in the gap of the door and he could suffocate for real at any moment. Many said that he was professional but urged him to be careful.

Ka Fai however could not be calmer. "I have made action scenes for years. If I feel I can't do it, I definitely wouldn't force anything. However the sea water was very cold, which was the most memorable. Chan Muk Sing was great. With my safety in mind he had a boat on stand by. The crew had underwater cameras and dove into the sea to capture the most convincing side. I thought the results were great."

Chan Muk Sing's heart ached for Ka Fai. "Maybe due to a storm, the temperature was very low. He was in the water for several hours and his teeth were chattering. Many crew members told me not to shoot for so long. I felt the danger there was even more serious than being trapped in the car. Actually I already accepted several takes. Ka Fai was the one who asked if he could try again. He really is very responsible and professional."

Ka Fai while busy with METAMORPHOSIS also took time to participate in his new film MMA (GIK JIN)'s post production voice work. Actually the film had a 10 minute trailer for the Cannes Film Festival to attract overseas buyers. Ka Fai and Aaron Kwok Fu Sing's film CONSPIRATORS (TUNG MAU) almost reached HK$10 million, no wonder Ka Fai happily said, "I am very satisfied with such a performance, thank you everyone for the respect and the support."

courtesy of on.cc

Sam Lee Chan Sam in the film THE INCREDIBLE TRUTH (WAN CHUEN) played a serious Japanese cop and had many scenes with Christy Chung Lai Tai. Chung Lai Tai revealed that the memorable was a heroic rescue scene. "That day the ground had a lot of bird feces, when I lay on the ground it really stank. Luckily the crew worried about bird flu and tried to coordinate with camera angles as much as they could. After every shot they would prepare alcohol for hand washing and clothing cleaning."

[2013.04.30] ANTHONY WONG'S IP MAN WINS A PRIZE

courtesy of on.cc

The Anthony Wong Chau Sun starred film IP MAN THE FINAL FIGHT (IP MAN JUNG GIK YUT JIN) received the Udine Far East Film Festival bronze prize. Chau Sun said, "I am very happy that the hard work of the cast and the crew received audience recognition. Director (Herman) Yau Lai To went to accept the award. He was so happy that he was drunk. (You didn't go?) I wasn't invited, I am busy with a play preparation. (Will you invite the recovered Cheung Tat Ming to return to the stage?) I won't eliminate any possibility of working together, let me contact him!"

Charlie Yeung declines Aaron Kwok's request for her to wear a bikini to celebrate box office success
Is Charlie Yeung's wish for CHRISTMAS ROSE to be a box office hit?
courtesy of mingpao.com

Aaron Kwok Fu Sing and Lynn Xiong (Hung Doi Lam) ended their 7 year relationship for just half a month, but they have already returned to form. Over the past dozen days or so, Sing Sing was asked about his break up with Lynn and rumors of "third party" Christine Kuo. He went from being down, upset to raging, but yesterday when he promoted CHRISTMAS ROSE (SING DAN MUI GWAI) he was in good spirits as he often flirted with Charlie Yeung Choi Nei. Freedom is truly joyous!

Sing Sing presented a rose birthday cake to the May birthday girl Yeung Choi Nei, who will turn 39 on May 23rd -- the film's opening day. Sing Sing wished for her to win the Hong Kong Film Award Best New Director with her directing debut. "Although I wasn't nominated for the Hong Kong Film Award, I still wish her well." Was not being nominated a huge setback? Sing Sing cracked up and said, "I don't worry about the past. I too want to be a film director. Will I win the Hong Kong Film Award Best Actor before directing? You can't calculate that, I won't win! I am better off keeping my feet on the ground and work."

Yeung Choi Nei did not ask Sing Sing to charge less for salary, he even got a raise because of his low salary. "I too made a lot of sacrifice, turning down other jobs, smoking for the movie and even got pneumonia from a water scene. The most regrettable was the director didn't put on a bikini and get into the water with me." He suggested that if the film would be a huge box office hit, Yeung Choi Nei would wear a bikini to thank the viewers who he would take photos.

[2013.04.30] VICKI ZHAO'S NEW FILM PASSES 100 MILLION IN 3 DAYS

The Vicki Zhao directed, Mark Chao starred OUR ETERNALLY LOST YOUTH is a big Mainland box office hit
courtesy of mingpao.com

The Vicki Zhao Wei directing debut OUR ETERNALLY LOST YOUTH was released last Friday in the Mainland. The film had help from popular actors Mark Chao (Chiu Yau Ting), Han Geng and Yang Zishan and opened with over 45 million yuan RMB. It passed LOST IN THAILAND's 35 million and created a new 2D Chinese film opening day box office record. After 3 days it even broke the 100 million mark and made Zhao Wei the nation's fifth female director to break 100 million at the box office.

As the Mainland prepares for the May Day golden week holiday, YOUTH might break 400 million yuan. According to Mainland media analysis Zhao Wei would extremely likely become the female director with the highest single film box office.

The film not only invited Faye Wong to perform the theme song TO YOUTH but also added Hacken Lee Hak Kun's RED SUN and Suede's SO YOUNG. It is planned for mid June release in Hong Kong.

Andy Lau says that his mood is much lighter when he sees the giant Rubber Duck.

Recently "arriving" in Hong Kong, the 16.5 meter tall giant yellow Rubber Duck has become the talk of the town and attracted many followers. Even Andy Lau Tak Wa longed to find his childhood memory again and thus deliberately discussed schedule with the event for almost two months before the "encounter". Wa Jai even changed his work schedule to accommodate the meeting.

Rubber Duck "father", Dutch concept artist Florentijn Hofman and his crew first inflated Rubber Duck at sea. Yet due to the strong wind recently, they spent a lot of time before the duck landed. Wa Jai immediately appeared to coordinate and even got along famously with "Duck Papa" Hofman as they discussed the production process and the journey. Wa Jai revealed that when he was little he had a rubber duck as well. Thus seeing the duck was like finding his beautiful childhood memory again, only the duck got bigger and he got smaller.

Meeting the duck for the first time, Wa Jai said that he never imagined it to be as gigantic as a cruise ship. With its bright colors, it lightened his mood! He also learned that Rubber Duck symbolized joy and beauty. It has visited different nations and cities to promote the message of joy. It also brought smiles to many different places. At the same time, this exhibition will raise fund for the Joyful (Mental Health) Foundation, which was very meaningful.

This year would be the 5th anniversary of Fei Jeh Lydia Shum Din Ha's passing. Friends decide to organize ALWAYS LOVE LYDIA memorial show on her birthday, June 1 to continue her happy image. Eric Tsang Chi Wai, Liza Wang Ming Chuen and Fei Jeh's god son Jacky Cheung Hok Yau yesterday appeared at the press conference in support. Joyce Cheng Yun Yi presented pistachios and environmentally friendly bags that were made from Fei Jeh's scraves to elders in appreciation.

Ah Jeh said, "Fei Jeh respected and enjoyed her job, never minding what character she would play. We already knew each other in 1996. In 1971 we formed 4 Golden Flowers, it's very hard to forget that Fei Jeh would speak for us like a big sister. She was very responsible." Chi Wai remembered the most how Fei Jeh excelled in creating atmosphere, speaking different people's impersonation of herself she could not hold back her laughter and like to wet herself. Chi Wai joked, "Hok Yau volunteered to dance. He is just like Jackie Chan, never willingly gives up the mic." Hok Yau planned to sing Fei Jeh's favorite songs. "I have to ask Fei Jeh at night what songs to sing, but I don't dare to say that I would be able to see her in my dream. I am afraid that she would yell at me."

6 production companies worked together on this event. One of the production units Chan Suk Fun earlier was accused of profiteering HK$20 million from the Miss You Much Leslie concert and merchandising. Ho Sau Shun also disagreed with a memorial concert for Fei Jeh and said that if anyone who profiteered from it would rot in notoriety. Chi Wai said, "Last time not everyone was clear on the matter, anyone who helped felt that they did it for Gor Gor. It was quite meaningful. What's in the past is in the past! To avoid any further gossip, this time stipulates that after expenses the proceeds will be donated to Caring for Children Foundation. Guests would have transportation expenses and I am willing to cover them."

Ah Jeh never discussed salary. She felt that this event was remembrance and respect for Fei Jeh. She said, "Perhaps Ho B isn't clear on the entire matter. If it can truly help Yun Yi, why not? I also believe that Mrs. Chan would profiteer." Hok Yau stressed that he had nothing to do with the troubles. He also did not feel that this time was not propping up Yun Yi at the Hong Kong Coliseum to fulfill Fei Jeh's dream. "Perhaps there is some misunderstanding, anyone who is in this business would understand, if you want to push someone to the Hong Kong Coliseum for a show, everyone have to rely on themselves."

Chan Suk Fun said that the report upset her. She said, "Ho B isn't clear on the entire matter. I definitely won't rot in notoriety because he definitely wasn't referring to me. Anyone who speculates would rot in infamy." She stressed that she did not profiteering 20 million. The memorial events were only fulfilling Gor Gor fans' wishes. She was the happiest about being able to thank everyone with Daffy Tong Hok Tak. "The events were already very perfect, they don't need others to add so many imperfections."

Cheng Yun Yi was busy with her mother's memorial show recently. She was very happy that Mama's friends would support the show financially and physically. She said, "This performance needs a lot of funding. Everyone put in money and effort to continue Mommy's spirit, I am very touched. I am a part of Mommy's memory, of course I have a part to play."

As for Ho Sau Shun's suspicion that someone took the opportunity to make money and thus objected to the memorial show, Yun Yi said, "He only has this response because he loves Mommy, perhaps Master Ho doesn't understand. Many friends put in a lot of money to make this show and risk the danger of severe losses. Master Ho knows I would be very nervous, but I indeed rather enjoy performing on the stage." Papa Adam Cheng Siu Chau due to work will not be able to attend. Yun Yi did not feel any regret. "It doesn't matter! I will wait until my concert to invite him. If he doesn't attend then I would be very heart broken!"
